MERX-II-M

Introduced commercially in 2007, MERX-M was the world’s first commercial automated analytical system based on US EPA Method 1630 for methylmercury analysis. Around the world, numerous national environmental agencies and leading universities have quickly embraced MERX-M as an easy-to-use, robust, and reliable system that delivers high quality data. MERX-II-M is the new Dual Trap automated methylmercury analysis system replacing the older MERX-M system.

  • Ultra-low level – All MERX systems undergo rigorous QC testing to ensure they achieve an instrument detection limit of <0.002 ng/L based on 40 ml volumes. Even lower detection limits can be achieved by using 60 ml samples.
  • Wide linear range – quantifiable range of 5000x (0.005 ng/L – 25 ng/L)
  • Reduced carryover contamination – with the patented gas-pressurized liquid handling system, the purge gas not only transfers the ethylated sample to the purge vessel, but also continues to flow through the sample vial and transfer line to remove any residual volatile mercury compounds, thus allowing the next sample to be processed immediately without a rinse cycle. Sharper peaks – The patent pending rapid trap heating releases the ethylated mercury species in less than ten seconds, resulting in sharper peaks and improved GC separation.
  • Fast – MERX-II-M utilizes a DUAL trap configuration: both traps are in use simultaneously at different stages in the analytical process, resulting in runs every 6.5 minutes or less.
  • Less maintenance – With the pump-free MERX-II-M system, there is no pump maintenance or requirements for constant tubing replacement. MERX-II-M has only a few replacement parts, which are all easily accessible and designed for longevity.
  • Gas Flow Control – electronic gas flow control set from Mercury Guru® software, and with electronic backlit displays.

Methylmercury Methodology

Liquid Handling
The system can be operated in two different sample purge modes: purge vessel mode, in which a sample is transferred to the glass purge vessel for purging, and purge-in-vial mode, in which the sample is purged directly in its vial. With either option, N2 gas volatilizes ethylated Hg species to a Tenax® trap. The system can accommodate 40 ml and 60 ml vials.

Trap Processing
With two traps, the MERX-II-M is fast. While one sample is purging to one trap, the other trap is being desorbed to the GC.

GC Separation
The released Hg species are separated on a GC column and then thermally reduced to elemental mercury.

CVAFS Detection
Mercury is detected using the Brooks Rand Model IV cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrophotometer (CVAFS) with patented optics for enhanced sensitivity. The new Model IV detector has a smaller footprint, is designed for easy maintenance and service, and is even more sensitive and stable due to improved optics.

Data Processing
Mercury Guru software integrates the detector signal and calculates results based on calibration and sample volume information. QC results are automatically calculated and flagged based on user-defined criteria. New software features include controls to auto-zero the detector, set detector sensitivity, set GC temperature and set gas flow rates.

ICP-MS interfacing
The system is designed to easily interface with the laboratory’s ICP-MS. Users have the flexibility to run the system with CVAFS only, ICP-MS only or with CVAFS and ICP-MS in series.

Liquid Overflow Protection
Now fully integrated, the liquid overflow sensor, when triggered, will shut down the system to prevent sample loss and damage to the system.

Other Improvements
Improved fittings with minimized dead-space, more robust valves, all USB data connections, and smaller footprint.
